Therefore you Are Graduating College — Now What?

69

So you’re graduating college this year, and if you’re probably thinking… Now what?!

I understand this because two years back, at about this same time, I had been beginning to think of something comparable. So I’ve put together the rough, post-graduation-life road map depending on a speech that I offered to some students at Montclair State University who were nearing their graduation day and, much more likely than not, beginning to question exactly what they were going to do right after receiving their undergraduate levels. Whether you are planning on getting work, going on vacation, or have no clue at all because you haven’t assumed that far ahead, the below information should be of a number of help. Enjoy!

Charting a plan

From my experience, the most important factor I realized after commencement was that there were no longer course outlines. What I mean with that is that in almost all school courses, or any structured category for that matter, students are always forwarded to a course outline or syllabus to explain to them a few issues:

1) What they can expect in the course
2) What will need of them
3) When their very own assignments will be due, along with
4) How the assignments must be prepared to achieve a high grade.

Effectively after graduation, there are no longer course outlines! No one is indicating what to do and when to do it! You will be free to do whatever you request, which is a great thing and a curse, as I can tell you firsthand. So you ought to create your course format based on what you want in life, and once you want to get it, I like to call this an action plan.

The best way to begin developing your study course outline, or action preparation, is to write down a list of ambitions. These can be as simple or maybe complex, vague or specific as you would like them to be. Some examples may be ‘to obtain an entry-level task working for XYZ Company’ or maybe ‘move into your area within a year. Write down several goals as you may have, then begin identifying what you need to do to accomplish these objectives.

For example, if one of my objectives is to obtain a basic level position in marketing, the action plan would audio something like this:
1) Develop a continue that accentuates my schooling and experience in a way that will make me a desirable candidate to employ for an entry-level marketing place
2) Research companies to recognize those that are looking to fill basic level marketing positions
3) Deliver these companies my resume having a customized cover letter explaining the reason why I feel that I would be a great candidate for the available place
4) Follow up with the companies to verify if they would like to schedule an interview
5) Prepare for, and go on the actual interview(s)
6) Follow up with the person you interviewed, saying thanks to them for the opportunity and telling them you look forward to hearing from them.

The next rational step in the best situation scenario would be you taking an offer for an entry-level location in marketing!

Follow this kind of methodology of developing a job plan for your goals, and in a little time, you’ll have a course format similar to those from your school courses showing you the best way to achieve them.

Creating a Day-to-day Itinerary

Just like with the study course outlines, no more study course schedules are telling you when and where you have to be to succeed. Therefore, short of winging it, you will have to begin developing your structured schedule, a daily holiday plan, based on your newly created motion plan.

To do this, you can start by simply setting aside a predetermined time frame each day dedicated to accomplishing each step of your action plan, along with sticking to it!

For example, if I was to use the sample action prepare that I created above, this daily itinerary might sound like this type of thing:
1) Spend one hour every day working on my resume until it is finally suitable to be presented to companies
2) Spend 1 hour each day researching companies that are hiring candidates for basic level marketing positions; I might start doing this a few different ways, such as browsing job search engines, social networking with family, friends, classmates, and teachers, attending on the web and in-person job fairs, familiarizing myself with alumni work placement tools, etc.
3) Spend one hour customizing the resume and cover letter to appeal to the companies I had recognized during the previous hour, as well as apply for the open jobs at these companies either through a credit card application process or via e-mail; the job posting will usually identify the desired method
4) Invest one hour in responding to any response I had received from earlier days or verbally following up on a polite phone call, the actual latter of which is sure to entertain interest in obtaining an interview.

The actual example above only shows the idea of creating a daily plan. The time frame does not always need to be an hour, and the same steps need not be carried out daily. However, it is important to create a structured schedule and do it, regardless of the time frame or even frequency. Adhere strictly to your schedule; you will most certainly notice results and begin progressing towards accomplishing your goals.

A few Final Tips for Your Trip

I’ve presented you with things I’ve learned within my own post-graduation life. Think about the following as my method of telling you, “Yes! The range is hot because We touched it and burnt myself already, and now I am telling you so that you won’t possess too! ”

Before becoming a scholar, protect your online interpersonal presence with your private functions. I discovered quickly that many of what impressed my friends in college or university probably wouldn’t impress potential recruiters. Things like pictures of anyone at fraternity/sorority parties having a three-minute keg is an acronym, or people writing obscenities all over your “wall,” or maybe posts on your feed about precisely how crazy last night was… you obtain the point. Take steps to ensure that only people you want to view these kinds of things can see these people. This can be done simply by decreasing access to only those you’re already connected with and then contemplating twice about adding more people, like your new supervisor, as ‘friends.’

Also, start creating profiles using some of the business networking sites. They’re similar to the social networking sites you could already be a member of, except their purpose is to allow you to network with business pros or others in your ideal profession. Additionally, they give you time to create a positive, professional web presence that XYZ Firm will see when deciding whenever they want to hire you for any open position.

Another valuable tool when starting your transition into your career is usually to create a new email address. This is done for free through many available websites. The benefit is that when you’re communicating with probable employers, they’ll see they have got from John. Smith@Yeha. Com as opposed to BMXRider54 @ xxx. com. It’s also a lot easier to order somebody your email address if it is your first and last name; there are more random words and figures.

In addition to preserving your online picture, you should follow some basic job interview guidelines that are sure to assist you in standing out from the rest of the pack. A few may sound like common sense. However, you would be surprised by a few of the horror stories I have noticed straight from the hiring managers which whom I’ve interviewed (talking about candidates who questioned before me, of course)! First, be sure to confirm almost all interview details including period, place, and what is anticipated of you. Always appear at least fifteen minutes early to collect your thoughts. Also, they may like you to meet some extra people or shadow staff for a day, in which case you could make sure your schedule is clear.

Before the interview, always investigate the company to understand who they are, what they do, how they do it, etc. One of the most hurtful things you can do during an interview is ask, “So what does your business do? ” However, you must prepare how you’re going to reply to some basic questions, as well as have got a list of questions that you would like individuals the person interviewing you; if at all possible questions regarding information this is simply not regularly available on their website which is relevant to the job you’re making an application for.

Also, when you’re in an employment interview, never sound negative. Whenever they ask you how you feel about cold calling or something different that you might not be too partial to, just say something such as “I enjoy challenging opportunities,” even if you do not! The purpose here is to get an offer to get employment from the company. As soon as they offer you a job, you can consider whether you want it or not really because, at that point, the ball is in your court. Once the interview is over, be sure to mail a thank you letter revealing the person who interviewed you, the amount you appreciate this prospect, and a specific night out that you plan to follow up to ensure your interview status.
